Ultrapure silica gels are suited to chemically bind to them various chemical moieties, so-called functional groups, thus creating functionalized silica gels. These can be used in a wide range of applications within chemical and bioprocessing. The process of removing unwanted residues from reaction mixtures is called scavenging, the respective media are called scavengers.

SiliaMetS Metal Scavengers

 

In the manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), the subject of unwanted impurities has gained a lot of attention. Often, these impurities relate to metals that were used as catalysts in the organic synthesis of APIs, and that remained in the reaction mixture. Today, these residual metals can be removed effectively, and therefore should be removed, see ICH-Q3D Guideline on “Elemental Impurities“.

Metal Scavenging using SiliaMetS products is simple, delivers excellent and reproducible results and can easily be scaled up from the laboratory to large-scale manufacturing, from grams to tons. Compared to traditional methods (active carbon, chromatography, distillation) SiliaMetS scavengers gain importance, as they often lead to better results at lower cost, and as part of safe and robust processes.

While metal catalysts play a significant role in today’s organic synthesis, many other reagents are frequently used as well, quite often in excess. Can these excesses be removed after the reaction is done? For this purpose, SiliCycle has developed the SiliaBond Organic Scavengers product line. SiliaMetS E-PAK Cartridges

​

Scavengers are widely recognized as powerful tools in organic synthesis, and their reputation has also been shaped by the pioneering role SiliCycle has played in this segment for more than two decades. SiliaMetS Scavangers are safe and they are effective. These two features make them successful. 

​

A good solution will become an even better solution if it is not just working well in the hands of competent chemists and lab technicians, but proves to be simple and robust on a large scale in technical production. A simpler process is, in almost all cases, the safer process, for both the environment and human health.

​

The idea of something simple and safe has guided SiliCycle in their work toward the development and design of the E-PAK cartridges. These radial-flow fixed bed cartridges make the process of scavenging very easy, be it with silica-based scavengers or active carbons. Nobody needs to work with dust-forming solids anymore, as the media come contained in special cartridges.

​

The E-PAK cartridges and the according filter housings are offered in a number of different sizes, covering lab, pilot, and commercial requirements. Scalability of your lab-scale results to significant throughputs has been found excellent.
